To avoid shrinkage of your clothes, it’s best to keep the temperature low. Cotton doesn’t need hot water to get clean: 30°C or even cold water is perfectly effective for most everyday washes. While cotton clothes can generally tolerate up to 40°C, staying below that limit helps preserve the fiber’s shape, softness, and structure over time.
Bed sheets, towels, or kitchen linen are designed to withstand higher temperatures, often up to 60°C or even 90°C in some cases. This is especially useful for hygiene reasons (removing dust mites, bacteria, or allergens), particularly in households with allergies or babies.
2. Use an Adapted Programme
Most washing machines offer a specific “Cotton” cycle. These programmes are designed to wash cotton garments thoroughly while adapting spin speed and water level to suit the fabric's needs.
- For clothing and lightweight cotton, select the programme at 30–40°C, ideally with a moderate spin (1000 rpm).
- For thicker fabrics like bath towels or cotton sheets, the Cotton 60°C cycle may be suitable, especially when hygiene is a priority.
Avoid high-speed spins on delicate weaves, as excessive agitation can distort the fabric.
3. Skip the High Heat: Air-Dry When You Can
High heat from tumble dryers is a common culprit for post-wash shrinkage. If you must use a dryer, choose a lower temperature setting and remove items while still slightly damp. Otherwise, air-drying flat is the gentlest (and most eco-friendly) option.

Does All Cotton Shrink the Same?

Basic cotton fabrics, often made from short fibres and mass-produced blends, tend to shrink more unpredictably. These fabrics are often sourced from multiple origins and may not be stabilized or uniform in texture, leading to uneven results after washing.

Can You Unshrink Cotton Garments?

While you can’t completely reverse cotton shrinkage, you can often relax the fibers enough to regain some of the lost size, especially if the fabric hasn’t been heat-set or over-dried. Cotton fibers are flexible, and under the right conditions, they can be gently stretched back into shape.
- Soak the garment in lukewarm water with hair conditioner. Fill a basin with lukewarm (not hot!) water and add a tablespoon or two of hair conditioner or baby shampoo. Let the item soak for 15–30 minutes.
- Gently remove excess water. Lay the garment flat on a clean towel and press out the water. Avoid twisting, which could further distort the shape.
- Stretch the fabric back to its original size. Lay the item on a dry towel or flat surface. Using your hands, gently pull and reshape the fabric.

Let it air dry flat. Leave the garment to air dry on a flat surface, preferably with something to hold the edges in place (pins, books, etc.). Avoid hangers, which may stretch unevenly.
You may recover up to 1 size, depending on how much the item shrank and the type of cotton used. Heavy fabrics (like towels or thick knits) are harder to reshape than lightweight ones. The earlier you act after the shrinkage, the better the results!
